AND THE FIRST DANCE .. AT MIDNIGHT! IT WAS A LONG DAY WITH THREE WEDDING CEREMONIES - BUT A GREAT DAY TOO
Ritu and Ven are a great couple and I was delighted when they asked me to be their official wedding photographer at the magnificent Thornton Manor in Thornton Hough, Cheshire.
I already new Ritu from a few years previously when I photographer her brother Ajey's wedding to his sweetheart Teedah at Slaley Hall in Northumberland which comprised a UK civil ceremony followed by an Indian wedding ceremony.
This time there was a civil ceremony, then a nod to Ven's Sri Lankan heritage with a Poruwa ceremony and then later in the day we had a Hindu ceremony to mark Ritu's family heritage - three weddings in one day, and what a wedding celebration it was!
I travelled down to Cheshire the previous day so that I would be 'on site' for the start of the wedding celebrations. I would hate to think I would be stuck on the M62 behind an accident on the day ..... noghtmare. So it was nice to meet with Ajay Shah, who had also arrived early to set up the Wish Tree.
Unforunately many of the travelling guests had their own schedules demolished by a bad accident on the M6 which in the end meant that some didnt get to bed until 2am or 3am on the day of the ceremonies!
I was up bright and early and met with Ritu and her sister Reeta while she was having her first session with Lara from Makeup by Lara for her civil ceremony and Poruwa ceremony. I was fascinated as I had never seen High-Definition Air Brush Make-Up before, where the bride's makeup is substantially applied with an airbrush ... amazing to see!
I then headed over to say Hello to Ritu's brother Ajay who was in charge of the day, making sure that everything was running to plan and everyone was in the right places with so many ceremonies and parts to the day - great to see him and Teedah after four years since their wedding, and their delightful son Max too!
I bumped into Ven as well as he finished his preparations for the day - though he did look a little nervous and was a bit quieter than I remembered his from our pre-wedding photography shoot at Rudding Hall near Harrogate!
Thornton Manor is an exquisite private mansion that is available for exclusive use weddings in Cheshire, the multiple rooms including the sensational Music Room are ideal for an Asian wedding or any large wedding celebrations - it is quite beautiful.
12.30pm seemed to come along rather more quickly than any of us expected, so soon it was off on the walk along the Lime Tree Avenue into the dining room where the civil ceremony was to be held. The 200 guests were straining their necks as we walked into the room - Ritu looked sensational in her cream wedding sari, and Ven's face went from nervousness and concern as Ritu arrived to be a big broad grin as she made it to his side!
Once the ceremony was over and flower petals marked their departure from the room, we quickly walked ontothe terrace at the side of Thornton Manor so that we could let the guests make their way to the area set aside for the Sri Lankan Poruwa which was at the side of the Lime trees.
Traditional Sri Lankan dancers and drummers then led the groom and the bride's parties seperately to the ceremony with much noise and colour and even acrobatics and leaps into the air by the dancers. Wow!
Ritu and Ven raised a big laugh when part of the ceremony needed Ven to put a necklace onto Ritu .. which didn't quite work out as planned. From there it was time for a break for champagne and fantastic Asian canapes, Mango Lhassi's, Pimms and a wonderful Asian buffet - it also gave us some time to get traditional photographs of family and guests and friends - alll done quickly and naturally with a laugh and a smile!
Later, Ritu went back to the Bridal Mews at Thornton Manor for another hair and make-up session with Lara and Ven went with his best man and groomsmen to get ready for the arrival of the Indian Dholis (drummers) who would annonce the start of the Hindu ceremony at 4pm.
Ven looked magnificent in his cream suit and his attendents looked quite the part with their green and gold scarves, as I popped back to see Ritu getting ready with her beautful red green and gold sari - she just looked fantastic all day long considering how little sleep she had enjoyed.
Despite the fact the dholis were late, the start of the ceremony at the front of Thornton Manor got underway with 'the boys' throwing all sorts of shapes and really getting into the celebration mood as they danced toward the front door and the family's were introduced to each other in a traditional ceremony before we moved inside for the arrival of the bride.
The music room looked amazing all dressed for the Hindu ceremony, and there was a hush as the bride arrived with her bridesmaids, all looking just stunning. The ceremony takes about an hour or more and involved many important component parts - including fire!
Once that third ceremony was over all the guests moved back to the reception rooms for champagne and more canapes to keep everyone going before the main meal of the day at 9.30pm.
This gave me my first real opportunity to grab a few photographs of the bride and groom for ten minutes, as Asian weddings are so family orientated that often its difficult for the bride and groom to have any time on their own - such are the demands, and their wedding day was so long and intense, I think even they appreciated the time we had together.
The team at Thornton Manor did a brilliant job transforming the Music Room from an Indian Wedding ceremony to a wonderful room fit for an evening wedding celebration and meal in not more than 90 minutes.
The food was fabulous by renowned Indian restaurant and caterers Dilli, the speeches were a laugh all the way, and as it turned to 12.30 am the first dance got underway in a swirl of dry ice, the dholi drummers banging music and happiness.
WHAT A FANTASTIC DAY OF WEDDING CELEBRATIONS AT THORNTON MANOR IN CHESHIRE FOR RITU AND VEN - SUCH A DAY TO REMEMBER FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES, AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALLOWING ME TO BE A PART OF THE SECOND WEDDING IN THE AGARWAL FAMILY!
PLEASE ENJOY THIS SNEAK PEEK FROM THE 500+ FINAL EDITED IMAGES. If you would like me to capture your Asian wedding naturally, but with a nod to tradition as well, ring me in the office on 01429 423165 or on my mobile 0778 7150966

Langley Castle Wedding Photographer Review from Shelley and Stephen

LANGLEY CASTLE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY:
SHELLEY AND STEPHEN IN THE MOONLIGHT - A GREAT WEDDING PHOTOGRAPH
LANGLEY CASTLE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS::
STEPEHEN AND SHELLEY ENJOY THE ROMANCE OF THEIR WEDDING AT LANGLEY CASTLE IN THEIR DECEMBER WEDDING
LANGLEY CASTLE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHS: ROMANCE INDEED .. ON TOP OF LANGLEY CASTLE IN THE MIDDLE OF A GREY DECEMBER DAY

Shelley has decided to embarrass me by penning the world's longest wedding testimonial, but as she says, it was a long tale, and takes some telling!!

Firstly, take my advice ...
STOP LOOKING FOR A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER, NOW!!!
You have found him.
If you are reading this on Dirk's BLOG or you are on his
website you can relax.
You have found your wedding photographer, you can stop stressing - You will not find a better photographer, or more natural and breathtaking photographs so just book Dirk and concentrate on all the other exciting plans for your dream wedding. Stephen and I were never going to be conventional. We had both waited until our 40's to get married and never thought we would ever find love like this.
We met through martial arts. He was my instructor. I thought he was stern and grumpy. We often fight each other so you can imagine the "courting" was a bit different... He proposed to me at The Trevi Fountain in Rome and the planning began. He always told me that whatever the cost, I could be a princess in my castle and have the complete fairy tale!
We wanted a Christmas wedding in castle, we wanted snow, log fires, Christmas trees and some fighting on the roof with Samurai swords (no, really!). We chose Langley Castle near Hexham. It was perfect, absolutely perfect. Then started my search for a photographer.

I had probably 6 or so different photographers come to our house where we poured over lovely albums, watched slide shows, listened to how the photographer would work and what the photographer would do.
I found this daunting and intimidating.
You know it is so important to capture that day, the best day of your life and it is such a huge decision.
On recommendation we chose a photographer, despite my better judgement and things progressed. I sent this guy a cheque as a deposit. I then never heard from him again. Fortunately I cancelled the cheque and have since learned that he has swindled lots of couples out of their money and has not produced their wedding photographs for them. I was so relieved we didn't get any further with him and so my search started again!!!
I came across a photograph in a north east wedding magazine, Belle Bridal, which showed a bride and her groom in a church yard with all her family around her. A strong gust of wind had taken her veil up and around her and was lifted around her family who were all laughing and holding onto their hats! I loved it.
The photographer was Dirk.
This was a Sunday and was in fact Fathers Day. I considered not ringing that day but did anyway. I left a message on an answerphone. Stephen and I then went shopping at B & Q for a light fitting (Sunday / Father's day - I know....). My mobile rang and Dirk spoke to me in the lighting section.....
I knew after the first two sentences that he was the photographer we would use. First impressions mean a great deal. He was funny, reassuring, charming and cheeky! (in a good way)
Then came the meeting at our house. This was the first time a photographer had asked us how we wanted the pictures to look, what we expected from him, how we wanted him to work and what we wanted him to produce. None of the others had asked that!
This was a photographer who listened and was interested. One of the others had even suggested we change the time of our meal to ensure she could get her shots! He was genuinely interested, and I think a little bit excited that we were to be unconventional and there would be a martial arts influence with some of the North East's top Black Belts present! I think the sword thing must have sounded a bit mad as well :) It took no time or discussion for Stephen and I to agree and Dirk was booked.
We had the most beautiful pre-wedding photographs done at Roker beach in Sunderland. It was so difficult to choose from those they were all stunning and we felt very reassured that we were going to get some tremendous photographs at our wedding. Dirk kept in close contact throughout and this settled me a great deal. Nothing was too much trouble.
The evening before I stayed at Close House Hotel in Wylam with my family. During the evening it started to snow. I could hardly contain my excitement and texted Dirk a couple of times as it was too much to hope for, my castle with snow!!
Dirk came the next morning amidst crisp white snow and took some photo's at Close House before we set off for the Castle. There was just enough snow! It looked fantastic and the photo's I have are beautiful! Really the day went so quickly and most of the time I did not even know Dirk was there. We did not want too many posed photographs and he has managed to capture natural images of everyone without (seemingly) any effort.
He coped so well with the madness that was my room full of bridesmaids just prior to the wedding and everyone loved him!
His manner was faultless, he was reassuring through out and was relentless! He stayed until really late, much later than I had thought and we have some of the most stunning photographs of Stephen and I outside of the castle in the dark with a full moon peeping from behind a cloud. I cannot tell you how delighted I am with our A3 wedding book.
I love that it is actually a book with far more photographs in than a conventional album.
I love that it is practicable and portable and won't end up under a bed or in the loft in years to come. I love that it tells a beautiful fairy tale, and I was absolutely a princess, with my claret and gold dress in my castle with my prince!
Each turn of the page still startles me with the easiness of it, the completely relaxed and fun moments are there for us. There is nothing that required any effort for us, Dirk had quite simply "nailed it"!!
Our day was full of laughter and this is very apparent from our album.
Dirk charmed everyone and I can only reflect on our B & Q conversation and say that "it does what it says on the tin"!!
He promised a wedding book that would truly capture the day, he promised that we need not worry about the photography and he promised the photographs would be perfect. He did all of this and more.
My testimonial may be a bit long but I could honestly write more. I will end how I started. Stop looking, he is it, you will not regret it I promise.(Oh and your mam and aunties might fancy him...)
Shell xx

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY AT JESMOND DENE HOUSE HOTEL: WINTER SNOW FOR LOUISE AND IAIN'S WEDDING

JESMOND DENE HOUSE HOTEL NEWCASTLE WEDDING:  THE ATMOSPHERE IS JUST RIGHT FOR THEIR WEDDING

IAIN AND 'THE BOYS' HAVE A FEW DRINKS TO SETTLE THEIR NERVES!

A BEAUTIFUL WINTER WEDDING BOUQUET

TIME FOR A KISS AFTER THE WEDDING CEREMONY AT JESMOND DENE HOUSE HOTEL

WOW! NOW THAT'S A WEDDING CAKE - A  WEDDING PRESENT FROM IAIN'S BROTHER WHO IS A TOP CHEF!

... AND THEN THE PARTY  UNTIL THE EARLY HOURS AT JESMOND DENE HOUSE HOTEL

Iain and Louise were living and working in Dublin, but were planning to be 'back home' for their wedding which was 6 days before Christmas.
I met with Louise and Iain and their parents when we had coffee at Jesmond Dene House Hotel, a great wedding venue in Newcastle. This was almost 2 years before their wedding.
Sitting and chatting with a prospective bride and groom and four parents is most definitely a bit daunting - even after all these years, but I'm a people person and we seemed to get on well and everyone loved the A3 wedding books I showed with the A4 parent book options. Most wedding books / albums allow just 80 images or less. These lovely US made books allow me to show about 180 in each book.
So, after saying our goodbyes and being excited about their plans for their wedding I headed off. About 6 days later I was walking in Barcelona with my wife on a long weekend break when Iain called to say that he and Louise and their parents had unanimously agreed that I should be a small but important part of their day as the official wedding photographer.
Now that parents and the bride and groom have their wedding books, Iain has very kindly offered this review of my role as their wedding photographer at Jesmond Dene House Hotel in Newcastle.
".... We can honestly say we had the day of our lives on our wedding day, and, thankfully, we have the photographs to prove it!
Dirk is an amazing photographer with a great eye for catching lovely natural photographs. Dirk's informal style suited us and his work really did show our day, just as it was.
We found working with Dirk a real joy too, he has a great sense of humour and puts you at ease when the camera is out, to be honest, we hardly noticed him taking photographs on the day. Mind you, this is not to be confused with not noticing Dirk at the wedding!
Louise was so thrilled to have the support of Dirk on the day, he was always lending a hand, whether it be holding a bag or reminded us to breathe and smile! He was like an honorary member of the family for the day and we were glad he was there.
I remember at one point one of the children asking “Who is Uncle Dirk? He's great” and I don’t think you get a better recommendation than that!
Dirk joined in our wedding, he was part of the meal, socialised with the guests and was genuinely a big hit. His approach was fantastic, as he saw and captured the day through the eyes of a guest, showing the true atmosphere, enjoyment and happiness of the occasion.
Dirk really does go the extra mile when it comes to your wedding, he planned a pre-wedding shoot to get used to his approach and he is always aware of your requirements and he checked throughout the wedding to make sure he had captured the sorts of images we were hoping for.
Post-wedding Dirk was also fantastic, the photographs were available on line so quickly and our friends and family were able to view.
He also took the time to develop a wedding book style and format to suit us, he was also patient and understanding when we wanted to tweak and develop the layout.
Dirk's photographs really speak for themselves, his professionalism is unquestionable but most importantly it is his personality which really does make the difference.
I hope anyone reading this testimonial can be reassured with Dirk.

HMS TRINCOMALEE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY REVIEW

HARTLEPOOL HISTORIC QUAY IS A GREAT VENUE FOR AN INTIMATE INTIMATE FAMILY WEDDING

Mmmmm, PUDDING!
Getting married onboard one of the oldest warships afloat is wedding venue you will never forget, but HMS Trincomalee, situated in a dock at Hartlepool Historic Quay on the north east coast of England, is one such venue.
She was built in 1817 and was restored to her full glory as part of the creation of Hartlepool Marina in the 1990's and is now a proud centrepiece for the town which recently hosted the Tall Ships races with over 1 million visitors.
I have photographed three small intimate weddings on board, one was the first wedding in 14 years where the wedding breakfast was served in the captain's Cabin - because there were less than 20 people in the party.
One review is below READ ALL MY OTHER RECENT REVIEWS HERE
"... Either by good fortune, recommendation, or testimonies such as this, you have found one of the very best wedding photographers. We engaged Dirk for our wedding on board the historic frigate HMS Trincomalee and we were won over by both his professionalism and creativity - and especially his open and friendly demeanour.
We really were overjoyed when he agreed to take on our small intimate wedding.
One look at his website and BLOG will tell you that he is no ordinary photographer and certainly not a 'standard' wedding photographer.
If you want stiffly posed photographs that eat up your special day, I'm sure he could turn his hand to that, but neither Dirk or we had that in mind.
We asked Dirk to capture the essence of the wedding celebrations, the fun and the laughter and the love.
We welcomed Dirk as a guest, a member of the family if you will, and he was with us from the start to the end, and he also joined us for dinner. Apart from being great company, he also succeeded in taking great photographs - mostly without the subjects being aware.
The result was magnificent.
Dirk is a brilliant photographer .. but he brings so much more to your wedding day experience.
Sign him up now, be happy and relax...."

Becky and Chris are busy professional people with a sense of fun, and when we first met to talk weddings they were also busy with their very young son William.
We seemed to hit it off as we talked about their plans and I was delighted when they decided to ask me to be a part of their wedding celebrations in Tynemouth.
Fast forward a year, and it was good to meet with them at Saltburn and walk along the beach, have coffee and catch up on their pre-wedding shoot about 8 weeks before their wedding at the famous Parish Church of St George at Cullercoats on the sea front.
They knew how I photograph weddings and the pre-wedding meeting and photography is a further step in building a bond of confidence, so that when we get together on the BIG day, we are not strangers and everyone, including parents who I often meet before a wedding too, knows that everything will be relaxed and chilled out all day... and that's just what happened!
When I arrived, Becky was busy in her bridal room at The Grand Hotel Tynemouth where the main celebrations were to be held, with best friend Rachael appointed to do her make-up, while the wonderful Carolyn Clayton was busy finishing off everyone's hair.
The Maggie Sottero dress looked fabulous and soon it was time to get dressed - Becky also had THREE pairs of shoes for the day - she was well prepared.
When I arrived at the church, everyone again looked remarkably cool and calm, and even though Becky was 10 minutes late, she swept down the aisle full of confidence with her father.
Straight after the service there was lots of kisses and cuddles, handshakes and backslaps, and then Chris and Becky decided they wanted to dash for a few photographs at St Mary's lighthouse down the coast - which rather wrong-footed a few guests who were lined up to photograph the car as it headed to the Grand Hotel ... but we turned the other way!
Soon enough we decamped at the hotel and enjoyed the happy atmosphere, the great speeches and superb food.
There's always time to hit the beach at Tynemouth - I think nearly every wedding party ends up on the beach sometime during the day, and Becky and Chris and their family and friends were no different in the hour before the evening guests arrived.
At one point it felt that half the wedding party were paddling in the north sea - just as the sun came out again - we had such fun!
It was a great day for Becky and Chris and their friends and families, thanks for inviting me to be part of the day!

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS 'SNEEK PEEK' AT BECKY AND CHRIS' WEDDING... just 20 images from more than 350+ which  tell the story of their great day!
