Blackfriars’ Banquet Hall dates back from 1239 when it was the celebrated venue used by King Edward III for receiving royal Scot, Edward Balliol, in 1334. In 2011 it was restored by the restaurant owner Andy Hook to bring it back to its former glory and it can now cater for weddings for up to 50 people.
The venue has also just been granted its civil license to hold weddings on the premises.

The Banquet Hall is decorated with authentic banners, chandeliers, wall coverings and stained-glass windows, and furnishings include large oak communal dining tables and matching chairs. Guests can also enjoy the enclosed courtyard for pre-event Champagne and canapés or they can move across to the restaurant later on in the day if they prefer.
Andy Hook, owner of Blackfriars, says: “We offers brides and grooms a truly unique setting in which to celebrate their big day in the heart of the city and we hope our first bridal event will showcase all we have to offer. In particular we are taking bookings for this year so if customers fancy a spontaneous engagement and a wedding on the same day we are the ideal place. We also have a dedicated wedding co-ordinator to ensure the day runs smoothly.”
The wedding fair will be held on Sunday May 13th from 12 noon to 4pm and visitors will be treated to Champagne and canapés to sample the food on offer at Blackfriars as well as 10% discount on food if they book their wedding on that day. Admission is free.
Read about Charlotte and Alex's Blackfriars Restaurant wedding celebrations after their church wedding in Tynemouth below!!I had been looking forward to Charlotte and Alex's wedding at Tynemouth for a long time and what a great time they had during their wedding day!
Perfectly relaxed and beautiful with a great wedding breakfast at one of the nicest restaurants in Newcastle - Blackfriars!
I started off the day wandering around and about Holy Saviours Church Tynemouth to get my bearings - and then headed off to the pub! Alex was meeting with his friends down at the Cumberland Arms at Tynemouth for a pint to settle his nerves, and who can blame him?

I followed the crew back to the church where everything was in full swing, guests arriving, for a few flower details and a shot or two of Alex starting to look nervous!
Charlotte was nervous too, but the great thing for me was that they had selected me to photograph their great wedding because they knew I would keep my distance, capture everything naturally just as it happened without stopping and starting and making them pose un-naturally.
She looked gorgeous when she arrived, and I just knew that Alex would be bowled over when she came down the aisle - and he was!
There was time for a few photographs outside of church in a swirling wind before we walked around the church to where Dreadnought double decker buses were laid on for the journey into central Newcastle to get us to Blackfriars!
Charlotte and Alex and their guests walked a short way to Blackfriars where a marquee was set up on the lawn for champagne and canapes - and Wylam Gold Tankard bitter!
There were lots of relaxed, happy people about and it was a pleasure to be part of such a great relaxed atmosphere, and I managed to grab a few nice photographs of the happy couple chilled and enjoying themselves in the quadrangle as well as a few family groups too before we headed into the restaurant for the grand wedding breakfast at one of the finest restaurants in the north east!
Good food and wine and great speeches and pudding and coffee's and more champagne flowed as the evening wore on with a traditional cutting of the cake and great cheers as Charlotte and Alex stepped onto the tiny dance floor for their first dance!
I could still hear the laughter and the fun as I walked off down to The Gate where I had parked my car first thing on the morning - and now it was well past 10pm.
A great wedding celebration for Charlotte and Alex
