The Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa in York is a magnificent 5 star wedding venue and it was lovely to be a small but important part of Anne and Paul's wedding there.
I first met with Anne and her Mum to have tea and cakes at the Cedar Court Grand Hotel nine months or so before her wedding celebrations.
I photograph weddings across Yorkshire and North Yorkshire in particular, so I was excited to be visiting a new wedding venue in the north of England and delighted to spend a few hours with Anne and her Mum Freda.
They had come across my wedding photographs on the Cedar Court Grand Hotel Facebook page and, to be honest, I didn't have to sell myself to be Anne's wedding photographer at all when we met. I think we didn't even mention wedding photography for the first hour, we just talked about her life, her change of career into teaching, Freda's happiness at her having found Paul, her dream husband and how much her 96 year old grandmother was looking forward to the day!
Fast forward to last weekend.
There was expected to be traffic and pedestrian chaos because of 6000 runners in the annual 10K Jane Tomlinson run, so I oped for a train journey right into the heart of York from home to avoid the problems with the roads. I was just 5 minutes away and when I arrived at the Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa and opened the door to room 201 and saw a VERY excited bride to be!
Hair and make-up were underway for Anne and her two closest friends who were the bridesmaids for the day while a beautiful white wand of flowers which had been delivered at the same time I arrived told me that there was a flower girl for the day as well!
Anne's Mum Freda was also around and it was nice to meet with her too, we had chatted on Facebook for months since we fist met and she excitedly complimented me on every one of the weddings I had posted on my Facebook page, my BLOG and my website .. and today it was her daughter's wedding day!
I dashed off for a 5 minute walk along the way to get some establishing shots at St Wilfrid's Catholic Church in York, almost next to York Minster where the wedding was to be held and then headed straight back on a scorching day to the hotel. Anne's Alan Hannah silk wedding gown was spectacular and so much the right dress for her, and once her and the bridemaids were in their dresses, it was time for a few photographs with her 96 year old grandmother!
I dashed off back up to the church soon after and caught Paul, just as he had left the pub, suitably refreshed!
Guests were gathering by now and I  climbed the stairs to the organ loft where a fine young chap was practising his trumpet for a number of songs to be played during the service, and very nice he sounded too!
It was a nuptual mass, and they're never over quickly, but there was good humour as well as reverence during the service, and, as ever, the Catholic priest in charge allowed me to get whatever photographs I need to tell Anne and Paul's story without me getting in the way.
If only Church of England vicars were so accommodating!
Once back in the sunshine, there were lots of backslaps and kisses and cuddles and bear hugs as guests and close family mingled with the new bride and groom, before I hopped into the font of their wedding car and took photographs of them waving to tourists along the route through York back to the Cedar Grand Hotel and Spa!
The new outdoor decking area was a lovely space with a live singer and plenty of champagne and canapes before we headed inside for the formal speeches and a fabulous (thank you folks!) wedding breakfast as befits a top quality hotel!
I managed to spend 15 minutes with Anne on her own before evening guests arrived and used a few areas around the hotel for portraits and managed to persuade Paul to jump in for a few photographs too.
By now it was time for the cutting of the cake and the first dance which went down a storm. I stayed for another hour to capture some of the shapes being thrown on the dancefloor, then said my goodbyes to the bride and groom and their parents, realised I had missed the last train home (it was a Sunday..) and so crashed on the sofa at my sister's home in York not far away!
Great wedding celebrations for Anne and Paul at the Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa!

Sunderland Wedding Photographers Review

SUNDERLAND WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER REVIEW:
SEALED WITH A KISS ... DEBRA AND LIAM AFTER THEIR WEDDING AT THE QUAYSIDE EXCHANGE SUNDERLAND

Debra and Liam knew what they were looking for in a Sunderland wedding photographer .. or any Newcastle wedding photographer or north east wedding photographer ..... or so I found out when I read their review of me after I photographed their wedding at The Quayside Exchange at Sunderland.
Red Face time ...
"....When we were looking for a wedding photographer, we were very clear that didn’t want traditional wedding photographs, instead we wanted someone who would capture our wedding day as it unfolded.
We searched Google for ‘quirky wedding photos + Newcastle’ amongst many other search terms and out of all the ‘hits’, Dirk van der Werff's BLOG pages and website stood out a mile.
It sounds terribly clichéd to say good photography is an investment (I sound like a salesman!), but that really was our thinking, it was one of the things that we realised must be perfect, above any other. After all, it was going to be the record of our perfect day, for all time!
Our first meeting with Dirk was very relaxed, there was no big sell from him, just a ‘this is what I do’ and it was exactly what we wanted.
He also gave us some good advice and top tips; let’s face it, he’s seen more weddings than most folk!
The pre-wedding shoot came around before we knew it and although I confess I was nervous (I’m a bit camera shy), Dirk made us feel at ease very quickly. We’d picked a beautiful location at Tynemouth Priory and it was a fabulous day.
When our big wedding day arrived, Dirk really did capture the day naturally as it flowed. So many of our family and friends commented on how much they enjoyed meeting Dirk at the wedding, how professional he was, and how much fun he was too!
The photographs he took are beautiful, we were thrilled and everyone who has seen them has remarked on how  special they are.  It has been lovely looking back at the story of our day as portrayed in the A3 wedding book he produced.
Thanks Dirk for capturing our wedding day and all its highlights and for making the whole process enjoyable and looking after us so well -  you’re a very talented man and we wish you well...."

EVERYONE A LOOKER .. WHAT CAN I SAY?

SARAH AND JOSH AND THEIR GROOMSMEN .. READY TO PARTY INTO THE EARLY HOURS
Sarah and Josh's wedding in a small village on the borders between North Yorkshire and Darlington was one to look forward to, a true English Country Garden Wedding.
One small problem .. it was pouring down, but, it was only a small problem and I was promised by Tammy, Sarah's mum that sunshine was on the way!
I turned up good and early at the small village of Aldbrough St John not far from Richmond two hours before Sarahs wedding. The plan was for her to walk to church with her father and after a fantastic intimate wedding to her sweetheart Josh before heading home in a round-about-the village sort of way in a Bently loaned by a friend of the family and join their closest friends and family for a champagne reception with canapes and a wonderful marquee wedding reception in the garden ... and despite the leaden gray skies early in the day, that's exactly what happened!
Sarah and her mum and I had first met some months befoe their wedding and we seemed to get on really well, so it was a good news day when I was booked to cover their lovely family wedding, and 6 weeks or so before the wedding I met with Sarah and her husband-to-be Josh for their pre-wedding portrait shoot. We enjoyed a couple of hours or more together and that meant that one their wedding day, we were not strangers, everyone could chill-out and have a fabulous wedding celebration while I just spent my time capturing great natural images of everyone having a truly fun time!
Once I had grabbed a few photographs of Sarah and her bridemaids getting ready, I headed out into the gardens to add lots of detail images from the marquee where Sarah's attention to detail included home made jam and chutnies for the English Tea Party wedding breakfast to come!
Josh looked cool, calm and relaxed after I walked across to the village pub in the pouring rain, the first of two occassions when my suit and cameras received a good soaking that day! He was enjoying a calming pint with his father and uncles and close family friends as guests gathered before the wedding service.
Still dripping, I headed back across the green and the bridge back to Sarah's house to make sure I didn't miss the wedding dress going on! Sarah looked stunning and her father had to hold back his tears as she walked down the staircase. As we walked outside to the Bentley which ferried the bridesmaids to the church, Sarah decided she was going to walk to church after all, despite the rain .. good for her!
It was smiles all round when Josh greeted his bride in the small village church, and before long we were back out into the rain and all the guests, replete with umbrellas, walked back to the family home for champagne and canapes.
After an hour or so, the skies cleared and the sunshine came out and we walked out to the marquee for the wedding breakfast and speeches, which were full of fun and tears!
Afterwards there was time for family photographs, some fun with a wall and with sheep, and it was laughs all the way as we headed inside once again for Josh and Sarah's first dance along with their family and friends.
It was a great day for Sarah and Josh and their closest family and friends in North Yorkshire!
