Sally and Graeme wanted a small intimate wedding with their closest family and friends and were initially attracted to the venue as sally's family side had ties to the area in the past and Danby Castle's link to the Tudor's - a favourite era for Sally who was thrilled that it was also Catherine Parr, Henry VIII's sixth wife's home!
I met with them when they were visiting the area from their home in Lincolnshire and what a glorious day it was too ... we seemed to get on very well, they liked the A3 San Francisco wedding books I showed them and they booked me on the spot.
Their pre-wed shoot was in Saltburn with their young son Ben and Sally's parents and soon enough it was time for their wedding .. with dreams of a long warm summer's day wedding at Danby Castle .. unfortunately for them and for me, it poured down much of the day, but a wedding is all about family and friends and, despite the weather gods, they had a fantastic family wedding!
I met with Sally and Graeme at their base at Gisborough Hall before heading over the Danby Castle to meet with guests and take photographs of the lovely 'tea party' settings on the tables - a great feature of weddings in the marquee at Danby Castle is the informality .... beautiful sandwiches and cakes on beautiful vintage plates and beautiful tablecloths .. just a big tea party and a refreshing change from some 'corporate' wedding meals!
There were comedy moments during the civil ceremony when their young son Ben dropped the rings he was handing over to his Mum and Dad, but it was all in good humour and in with the relaxing laid-back feel of the wedding.
Under leaden skies there was no time for photographs outside on the lawn or in the castle ruins with the beautiful North Yorkshire rolling hills and valleys that make the backdrop to Danby Castle, but it was nice and cosy warm in the marquee as guests settled down with friends and relatives for an intimate wedding tea party washed down with humorous speeches and annecdotes from Sally's father and husband Graeme.
The children managed to brave the rain when itn turned showery for a while to chase the chickens and feed the miniature horse, while the sheep and the cows in the fields all around seemed not to be bothered at all, and I managed to photograph some nice small family groups easily within the marquee as distant thunder rumbled on, then persuaded Sally (well, to be honest, she needed no persuading...) to head back into the ceremony room to get a photograph of her sitting regally on her 'throne' in a room the Catherine Parr almost certainly passed through in her time at Danby Castle, surrounded by candles, she really felt the part!
Later on we cut the cake and a live band serenaded the 35 guests while dancing into the late hours of the day.
A great wedding day at Danby Castle for Sally and Graeme and their closest family and friends, a really lovely venue for an intimate wedding steeped in history and something 'just a little bit different' and ideal for a retro wedding, a vintage wedding or a wedding that doesn't feel like a 'corporate' production line wedding venue. I think you will like it a lot!
